The quick version

Your location helps us find the forecast and nearby spots. It goes to the services that make those features work; we don’t keep a location history.

Feedback is saved privately. Recent diagnostic logs are attached by default when you send it, and you can switch them off. Your email is optional. No ads, no visitor accounts, and no selling your data.

This policy explains how Sunset Near handles data and how to contact us about it.

What we handle

DataWhyWhere it goes
Your location. If you tap “Use my location”, your browser shares your device’s position after you allow it. Without that, we estimate your city from your IP address (using the location Vercel attaches to the request) or your time zone.To fetch the forecast for where you are.Coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo (weather and air quality), BigDataCloud and OpenStreetMap Nominatim (to turn coordinates into a place name), and a rounded area to NOAA Aviation Weather (airport reports). When you open viewing spots, coordinates and a bounded search radius are sent to the FOSSGIS Overpass service (or Private.coffee as a fallback) to find nearby OpenStreetMap places. Nearby results are cached in memory for up to 15 minutes; there is no persistent location database.
Places you search for and pick.To find the place and remember recent ones.Search text goes to Open-Meteo’s geocoding service. Recent places stay in your browser only.
Your votes and saved settings (“Did the sky deliver?”, recent places). To show your own sky journal and preferences.Your browser’s local storage, on your device. We don’t receive these saved preferences or votes.
Calendar reminders. When you add a reminder, the site generates a calendar file for the time and place you chose. To give you the reminder. The file is created on request and not stored.
Feedback. Your message, feedback type, optional email address, and diagnostic logs if you leave the attachment option on.To improve the site and reply if you provide an email.Sent to our Vercel backend and stored privately in Neon Postgres. Diagnostic reports contain a coarse browser/device category, app version, and up to 12 recent errors or failed request statuses from the current visit. They do not include console text, request bodies, full URLs, coordinates, or form contents. No forecast location is attached. The report stays in browser memory until you send feedback; you can preview it or uncheck the attachment option. A short-lived, one-way code derived from your IP address limits spam; the raw address is not stored in the feedback database.
Server logs. Our host, Vercel, keeps standard request logs (including IP address).Security and reliability.Vercel, for its normal retention period.

Cookies

We don’t set advertising or tracking cookies. We don’t enable Vercel Web Analytics in this app. The site uses your browser’s local storage only for your own saved places, votes and preferences, which you can clear at any time in your browser settings.

Who processes data for us

Some of these are outside your country, including the United States. Each has its own privacy policy. We don’t sell or share your personal data for advertising.

Your choices and rights

How long we keep it

Nearby search results and their coordinate-based cache keys expire after 15 minutes in server memory. We do not keep a location history or visitor account database. Feedback older than 12 months is removed during subsequent feedback submissions, or sooner on request. Spam-limiting records expire within an hour and are removed on subsequent submissions.

Children

The site isn’t directed at children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect their data.

Changes

If this policy changes, we’ll update the date above.
